Know Your Customer (KYC) Identity Verification
Every compliant relationship starts with proving who your customer is. We build the KYC process that collects the right identity information and verifies it by methods FINTRAC accepts, for individuals and businesses alike.
Knowing a Customer Starts With Their Identity
Before you assess risk or monitor a relationship, you must establish who the customer actually is. That means collecting the identity information the PCMLTFA requires and confirming it through an accepted method. Get this first step wrong and every control that follows rests on an unverified name.
Individuals and Entities Are Verified Differently
Identifying a person means confirming their name, address, date of birth, and occupation through an accepted method, such as government photo identification or the dual-process approach. Identifying a business means confirming its existence and details from records like incorporation documents. We build both, so whoever walks through your door is verified correctly and on file.
Individual Identity
We verify individuals using government photo identification and other FINTRAC-accepted methods.
Entity Identity
We confirm a business exists and is who it claims through reliable records.
Method Selection
We choose the right verification method for each customer and channel you serve.
Identity Records
We keep the identity records the law requires you to retain and produce.

KYC Verification Questions
Clear answers to the questions Canadian businesses ask most about identifying and verifying customer identity under the PCMLTFA and FINTRAC methods.
What information must we collect?
For an individual, typically name, address, date of birth, and occupation. For a business, its name, address, and the nature of its activities.
How do we verify an individual?
Through a FINTRAC-accepted method, such as government-issued photo identification, a credit file, or the dual-process method using reliable sources.
When must identity be verified?
At the point the PCMLTFA requires, generally before or when you establish the relationship or conduct certain transactions with the customer.
Is KYC the same as CDD?
KYC is the identity layer, confirming who the customer is. Customer due diligence is the wider process that also assesses and monitors them.
How long do we keep identity records?
For the retention period the PCMLTFA sets, so you can produce evidence of how each customer was identified if FINTRAC asks.
