Respondent Diligence and Nested Banking Relationships
Correspondent banking means providing services to another financial institution, and that institution’s customers become your indirect exposure without ever appearing in your onboarding process. Canadian requirements expect you to understand the respondent institution properly, covering its ownership, the quality of its supervision, and whether its own controls are adequate before you accept the relationship at all.
Nesting is where this becomes genuinely difficult. A respondent may itself provide correspondent services to further institutions, so payments reaching you originate from banks you never assessed and may not know exist. Establishing whether nesting occurs, and setting clear expectations about it in the relationship, is among the more important questions a correspondent bank can ask early.

Why Correspondent Banks Choose Us
We build diligence that reaches past your direct respondent to the institutions sitting behind it, because nested relationships create real exposure you never agreed to and frequently do not see.
Respondents Properly Assessed
We assess ownership, supervision, and control quality before a relationship begins, rather than treating approval as a formality.
Nesting Actively Identified
We establish whether your respondent serves further institutions, because those banks reach you without any assessment whatsoever.
Relationships Reviewed Ongoing
We build periodic review into the relationship, since a respondent’s risk profile changes long after you approved it.
Payment Transparency Maintained
We check that originator information travels with payments, because missing detail obscures exactly what you most need visible.
Correspondent Banks We Support
We support correspondent banking operations right across the whole of Canada, covering both Canadian institutions serving foreign respondents and foreign institutions maintaining correspondent relationships with banks operating here in Canada.

Correspondent Banking Questions
Clear and direct answers to the questions correspondent banks ask most about respondent diligence and their Canadian anti money laundering obligations.
What must we assess beforehand?
The respondent’s ownership, its supervision, the quality of its own controls, and the jurisdictions in which it genuinely operates.
What is a nested relationship?
Where your respondent provides correspondent services to further institutions, whose payments reach you without you assessing them at all.
How do we identify nesting?
By asking directly, setting expectations in the agreement, and monitoring payment origins for institutions you never knowingly accepted.
Is our initial approval sufficient?
No. Respondent risk changes over time, so relationships need periodic review rather than approval treated as a permanent decision.
What about missing payment information?
Originator and beneficiary detail should travel with payments, and missing information obscures precisely what your monitoring needs to see.
